As part of the sculptors symposium "Gletscherblut" which took place in 1999 in South Tyrol, Engl climbed to 3000 Meters above sea level in order to paint a chosen rock yellow. The sun colour, brought up by the hand of man shone far and wide. Time and weather have taken their toll and the rock has returned to its natural state, the colour bleached and disappeared again. As it should be. Through this Engl shows that man can only Intervene to a limited extent in the rhythm of nature. His stylised, minimal female torso made from blackened spruce, created in 1999, can also be used as a chair. Here Robert Engl expresses gifts of motherly calm and protection that the female form can give us. He has occupied himself several times with the theme of Jacob's ladder In this catalogue he shows two examples, one in silvered wood, and the other in wood that has been blackened and waxed. In both examples one sees the well to reach other spheres of expression; and also the meticulously exacting, difficult way one has to take in order to do this, something which has to be contended with and overcome. Engl's head forms, which are to be taken as containers of the mind, in their clarity and simplicity show how much the content determines the soul of life. The statue "moving" made in Swiss stone pine and acrylic shows the pull that the human form, reduced to its essential, internalized and considered, can have upon every one who goes near it. In 2000, during Frequenzen's working symposium in the Frankischen-Schweiz-Museum in Tiichersfeld Engl created a stone sculpture "chair" a clear-cut, simple form in stone pointing towards the quiet and stillness we need for the creative employment necessary to arrange our lives positively. Since 1993 Robert Engl has regularly exhibited in several countries, either alone or with colleagues from the art groups to which he belongs. Each of his works can only be understood in connection with his life and his experiences. When we are prepared to find a way into his philosophy each of his works is an enrichment. Robert Engl obviously creates from this source and in doing so finds moving expression in the clear, uncompromising forms of his own language. |
